Adaptive Procrastination: Example #8,937

Some people may believe in that archaic notion of erring on the side of caution when it comes to utilizing the filling station, but those silly folk have a lot to learn. See, adaptive procrastinators such as myself wait until the last possible second/last possible mile, thereby leaving more room in the tank (and increasing productivity!) for when we do fill up. This allows us to make fewer trips to the gas station, unlike those poor suckers who waste tons of time at the Shell station or what have you every time the level hits a quarter tank.

Nice to see I’m not alone! In my car, the empty zone comprises of 3 red dashes; the engine will run for a solid 10mins (@55 mph) with the needle extended past the third. So to those occasional passengers who find this practice imprudent, may this post disarm any concern, you’re in safe hands.

Animal Collective: Summertime Clothes (via Pitchfork)

Mr. Moussavi promised that change; he also promised greater personal freedoms, including for women. If Tehran refuses to recognize that yearning or respect the will of its people — most of whom are too young to remember the 1979 Islamic revolution — the government will lose even more legitimacy. The mullahs have had a tight lock on Iran up to now. But they should not forget what happened when the shah lost his people’s trust.

The elections are another potent reminder that there can be no illusions about Iran’s government and its malign intent. That is a hard political fact….

We know that some in this country and in Israel will say that this election is proof that there can be no dealing with Iran and that military action is the only choice. The last thing the United States or Israel needs is another war with a Muslim state. An attack would only feed Iran’s nuclear ambitions and spur it to take even greater efforts to hide its program. The only choice is negotiations backed by credible incentives and tough sanctions. Even if the mullahs had allowed Mr. Moussavi to win, that would still be true.
”

- NYT Editoral, 6.14.09

saramcpherson:

“I’ve come here to Cairo to seek a new beginning between the United States and Muslims around the world, one based on mutual interest and mutual respect, and one based upon the truth that America and Islam are not exclusive and need not be in competition. Instead, they overlap, and share common principles — principles of justice and progress; tolerance and the dignity of all human beings.

… So let there be no doubt: Islam is a part of America. And I believe that America holds within her the truth that regardless of race, religion, or station in life, all of us share common aspirations — to live in peace and security; to get an education and to work with dignity; to love our families, our communities, and our God. These things we share. This is the hope of all humanity.

Of course, recognizing our common humanity is only the beginning of our task. Words alone cannot meet the needs of our people. These needs will be met only if we act boldly in the years ahead; and if we understand that the challenges we face are shared, and our failure to meet them will hurt us all.”
